Thematic issue on nanotechnology and ELSA studies: Autumn 2008 Nanotechnology is still in its early phase. The heavy investments in the field are legitimised through reference to its great scientific potential and to the considerable social benefits envisaged in the shape of industrial development and improved products made available to the public. These arguments are not unlike the ones presented to legitimise the heavy investments in biotechnological research over recent decades. In both these fields, the need for an ethical component has been discussed, primarily due to concerns about the potential for negative impact on health, on the environment and on society. These concerns focus on the hazards and the choice of values associated with specific research projects; however, they also relate to principal issues connected to the management of social developments within fields of research involving complex sets of political, financial and industrial stakeholders. We invite contributors to submit articles which illuminate ethical, legal or social aspects associated with the establishment of nanotechnology in a Nordic context (often described as ELSA studies), including discussions of specific nanotechnological visions or concrete projects. Since it is still the early days of nanotechnology, there are as yet few concrete examples of applications which might serve as a basis for discussion, and asking at this point in time whether we need nano ethics is a way of highlighting the potential role of ethical reflection in the early stages of a field’s development. We also invite contributors to submit articles which reflect on the actual, desirable or possible role of ethical research in establishing such fields. Which lessons, if any, can be transferred from biotechnological ELSA research, and which pitfalls should be avoided? Deadline for contributions: 1st July 2008 <Back to the main page> |
